Where have all the jingles gone? Product-specific jingles used to be the norm for commercials, but have become much less common on the national scene. Perhaps we have gotten too sophisticated for this - although a theme song is still more than acceptable, as in Journey Diamond Jewelry's use of the old Cat Stevens song, How Can I Tell You, reworked and evocatively sung by Chan Marshall for the "Sleeping Beauty" ad. I can think of a number of current products or companies with jingles, such as Sleepy's, Carnival Cruises, Empire Carpet - and Campbell's has a new one (I don't really know how new it is, but anything that isn't "mm mm good" is new) although nothing really outstanding occurs to me at the moment. There are jingle singers out there, and people casting for jingle singers. So where are the jingles? What do you think? Are there any great ones out there? What are your favorites from old ad campaigns?
You can revisit some of the jingles of yesteryear at various web sites such as this one. |
John Hardy, won't you please come home! The new pre-amp still has not arrived. I've decided I should probably go back in the house and get some work done. My family does not understand why I've been spending so much time on the front porch...

MCM News
a few highlights...
The New York State Department of Public Health PSA on second-hand smoke that I referred to last month is available for viewing. It's a powerful piece - take a look. Thank-you again to the good people at Cotton Hill for inviting me to help with this campaign. |
I can has aliens! It was a pleasure to work with Cornucopia Enterprises of California on a radio spot for Dutch Bros. Coffee last month, in particular because of the opportunity to work with the incomparable Ben Wilson who did the production. Ben's genius (okay, mine too) can be heard here. |

Forgotten Ellis Island. The anticipation was killing me but the premiere of this documentary, on which I worked with Lorie Conway of Boston Film & Video, finally took place! It is a beautiful film and I hope you will get to see it. Read the story of a magical day, here. |

Avian Bloopers. This is, for a change, a tale of the right bird at the right time. The Halloween episode of CSI NY was a scary one. One of the crimes de nuit was a case of murder at a house in Amityville NY, at which an apparently similar murder had occurred 31 years before. Lindsay Monroe (Anna Belknap) and Danny Messer (Carmine Giovinazzo - an actor I admire for his great dialect work) went to investigate - at night of course - very creepy. In the course of all this, some owls call - Great Horned Owls. Surprise! These owls are common in the northeastern United States - actually throughout North and Central America and parts of South America if you want to know the truth. They are probably the owl most often heard in films and on television and certainly on Halloween. It didn't take a whole lot to get that one right, but I doff my cap to the producers just the same.
If you missed the story in last month's newsletter about the owl in My Cousin Vinny you can read it here.
